Antibiotic courses

A calm reminder app for antibiotic courses

Three times a day for seven days sounds simple until day four, when you genuinely cannot remember whether you took the lunchtime one.

Kounts Dose schedule builder showing every-few-hours and fixed-course scheduling options

A course of antibiotics is a short, sharp scheduling problem that ordinary daily reminders handle badly. The instruction is often every eight hours rather than at breakfast, lunch and dinner — which means one dose lands at an awkward hour and drifts. It runs for a fixed number of days and then must stop, so a repeating daily reminder becomes noise you have to remember to delete. And it matters more than most routines that you complete it as prescribed. Kounts Dose treats a course as a first-class thing: an interval or set of times, a start date, an end date, and a log you can actually check when you're two days in and unsure.

What actually goes wrong: Mid-course uncertainty is the real issue. By day three, the doses blur together — and an ordinary reminder app that only pings at fixed times can't tell you what you already did.

Setting it up in Kounts Dose

  1. Set it up as a course, with an end date

Choose the course schedule and give it a start and end date — “7 days from today”. Dose reminds you through the course, then stops on its own. No orphaned reminder still going off next month, and no need to remember to delete anything.

  2. Use every-N-hours if that's what the label says

“Every 8 hours” is not the same as three times a day, and Dose has it as its own schedule type. Pick the interval and your first dose time and it works out the rest, keeping the spacing the prescription actually asked for.

  3. Note the food rule where you'll see it

If yours needs to be taken with food, or on an empty stomach, put that in the medicine's note so it's in front of you at the moment you're logging the dose rather than on a leaflet in the kitchen drawer.

  4. Log each dose as you take it

One tap from the notification, a widget or Today. Then when you're unsure at 9pm on day four, History's log answers it exactly — with times — instead of you guessing from the blister pack.

Follow your prescriber's instructions and the label on the box — not this app, and not this page. Kounts Dose can't advise you on a missed dose, whether to double up, whether to stop early, or how a medicine interacts with food, alcohol or anything else you take. If you feel worse, develop a reaction, or are unsure about a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist. Don't stop a prescribed course early because you feel better.

Why it suits this routine

Courses end by themselves

A start date, an end date, and reminders that stop when the course does. That sounds small until you've had a finished prescription pinging at you for a fortnight, or deleted the reminder early and lost the record of what you took.

Awkward intervals are handled properly

Every 6, 8 or 12 hours, with sensible handling of clock changes, rather than three vague mealtime slots. Each scheduled time can carry its own amount if the first dose is a double.

A record you can hand over

If you end up back at the doctor because the infection didn't clear, exactly when you took what is useful information. History shows the course as a calendar, a week grid or a chronological log, and Dose Plus can export it as CSV.

Questions, answered

How do I set a reminder every 8 hours?

Use the every-N-hours schedule: choose 8 hours and the time of your first dose, and Kounts Dose spaces the rest accordingly, including the overnight one. That's different from picking three fixed mealtimes, which quietly changes the spacing the prescription asked for. Interval scheduling is part of the one-time Dose Plus unlock.

Will it stop reminding me when the course ends?

Yes, if you set it up as a course with an end date — reminders finish with the course and the history stays. That's the tidiest way to handle anything short-term, from a week of antibiotics to a tapering course.

What happens if I miss a dose of antibiotics?

That's a question for your pharmacist or prescriber, and it depends on the medicine and how late you are — an app shouldn't answer it. What Dose does is make the situation clear: you can see whether the dose was logged, and at what time, so you can give an accurate answer when you ask.

Can I track a course for my child?

You can track one routine on one iPhone — Dose is single-person by design, with no profiles or accounts. If you need to manage several people's medicines in one app, an app with multi-user support will serve you better; we'd rather say that than have you find out after paying.
